The Nigerian Hospitality and Tourism Sector Skills Council (HTSSCN) is under the coordination of the NIHOTOUR’s Management. It is saddled with the responsibility of coordinating the leisure, recreation, travel, hospitality and tourism employer-led engagement platform that actively involves trade unions, professional bodies, and other key stakeholders. The Council is also saddled with the role and responsibilities to reduce demand skills-gaps and shortage in the industry by identifying, cataloguing, and providing occupational standard demand-skills with particular reference to National Occupational Standard (NOS) and National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) delivery. As such the Council carry’s out skills and workforce development of all workers in the diverse sectors; influence how skills training is delivered in Nigeria; improve productivity; increase opportunities for all individuals in the workforce;  set up Labour Market Information System (LMIS) to assist planning and delivery of training, capacity building and development for quality tourist service in the country and beyond.

THE ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM SECTOR SKILLS COUNCIL OF NIGERIA  (HTSSCN)

The Hospitality and Tourism Sector Skills Council of Nigeria (HTSSCN) is established pursuant to the Federal Executive Council’s approval in April, 2013 of the developed six level framework for Nigeria Skills Qualification by National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in partnership with stakeholders including NIHOTOUR with the roles and responsibilities to:-  

Carry out an employer-led engagements that actively involves trade unions, professional bodies and other key stakeholders;

Skills and workforce development of all those employed in the sector;

Influence how training is delivered in Nigeria;

Reduce demand skills gaps and shortage in the sector;

Improve productivity;

Increase opportunities for all individuals in the workforce;

Setting up Labour Market Information System (LMIS) to assist planning and delivery of training

In furtherance of the aforementioned, the Council is required amongst others to:-

Carry out research and consultancy services

Build capacity for Quality Assurance Managers, Master Craft Persons, 

Maintain industrial liaison with the sector players

Run a complete leadership and governance structure

Seek financial funding for operations through donor agencies

Identify skills development needs and preparing catalogues by skills types

Develop skills competency standards and qualifications

Plan and execute standardization of workplace skilled personnel accreditation process 

Plan and execute training of trainers

Promotion of academies of excellence

Establish process of coordinating and incorporating emerging trends in skills development
